5G is a relatively new technology using electromagnetic fields; it has widespread implications to society and it touches on many different fields of expertise. Debate within all of these fields, as well as the wider interdisciplinary debate, has been ongoing for several years. In the meantime, the understanding of 5G technology and its effects continues to advance - any new discoveries will steer the debate towards different directions.

\nCurrently the scientific discussion mainly focuses on potential health effects of the higher frequencies used – whether 5G wavelengths have the potential to cause cancer for instance. The effects of exposure to more antennas than with the predecessor technologies is a particular area of concern since there would be no unexposed control group to judge the effects against.\xa0

\nSome countries and cities within the EU have therefore temporarily prohibited the implementation of 5G until more knowledge is available. This knowledge is, however, steadily advancing as scientists continue to conduct studies to observe outcomes, and then interact with each other through conferences, as well as the publication and review of articles.
