The Collapse
Entrepreneurial Journalism is a brand new field that has emerged alongside the collapse of traditional business models for news.
Historically, the news industry has sustained itself with revenue derived primarily from advertising and paid content. In recent years, this reliance on ads and analog subscriptions/content purchases has suffered for three primary reasons:
1. The equilibrium of supply and demand for content was upended by massive decline in barriers to entry, driving down the cost of advertising and depriving existing news producers of ad revenue they had grown accustomed to.
2. Technology changes meant that products created for print and traditional TV and radio weren’t well-equipped to meet shifting consumer needs. Consumer preferences and demands for new kinds of content in this era of mobile, social, connected news means that product tastes have changed — consumers are no longer satisfied with the news formats and approaches that previously dominated the market.
3. New communities enabled by the Internet want and need new products and services - from passionate yoga enthusiasts to those who invest in developing market commodities.
